Intranets, and e-mail, are increasingly used by companies with operations in a number of countries to communicate and process information about their staff and clients. Because of the very strict rules on the communication and processing of this type of information intranet managers need to take steps to ensure that all appropriate actions have been taken to comply with the legislation.

This briefing paper outlines some of the areas where intranet managers need to ensure that they have not inadvertently breached legal and regulatory requirements, including issues arising from the increased use of electronic documents, and ensuring that intranets can be accessed by visually impaired users.

There are surprisingly few books currently in print on intranet management. Here we identify and comment on some of the books available.

Over the last couple of years the number of sites offering advice on intranets has decreased, and many of those that are still notionally in existence have not been updated.
